To continue our celebration of Tu B'shvat, we invited Farmer Sara from Grow Torah to our classes! On Tu B'shvat we celebrate trees and plants and our relationship with nature. Farmer Sara taught us about our responsibility to "l'ovdah u'shomrah" to work and guard over the land that Hashem has gifted us with. Our 5th graders guided our kindergarteners in helping each kindergartener to plant and care for their own small "farm" of microgreens. This act of creating and sustaining our own “micro-ecosystem” drives home the lessons of stewardship that are central to Tu B’Shvat. Our kindergartners are excited to thank the 5th graders by sharing what they grow.

Students filled trays with water and liquid watercolor paint and then placed them outside to see what happens! A few days later they had the opportunity to paint with them to create beautiful ice paintings!

KC has been talking about friendship, tolerance, and respect while learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, his ideas, and values. The students created artwork and sang songs about this unique man, who was a strong supporter of Jews and Israel.

In preparation for Tu B’Shvat, KC has been busy learning all about it! They learn that Tu B’ Shevat is the Jewish New Year for the trees. They sang songs, listened to the stories, watched videos. Students had the opportunity to create their very own palm trees!

Schechter Queens Judaic Studies administrators and teachers welcomed 40 colleagues from a dozen Jewish Day Schools in the Northeast on Sunday, November 14, for some incredible professional development learning and sharing led by Dr. Esty Gross, Director of Education at the Center of Educational Technology and Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern California. Participants delved into the Development of Speaking Skills Workshop among other activities. We hope to host many more symposiums for our staff and community schools in the near future.
